5 Sunnahs to Practice Before Sleeping

The end of the day is not just a time for rest — it is also an opportunity to reconnect with Allah, reflect on our actions, and prepare our hearts for the night. The Prophet ﷺ taught beautiful Sunnahs that turn the simple act of going to sleep into an act of worship filled with barakah and protection.

By practicing these Sunnahs, we not only improve our spiritual state but also end our day with peace, remembrance, and mindfulness.

Here are five Sunnahs to practice before sleeping.

1. Perform Wudu Before Sleeping

One of the most recommended Sunnahs is to perform wudu (ablution) before going to bed.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When you go to bed, perform ablution as you do for prayer…”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)

Sleeping in a state of purity brings protection and blessings. It also prepares the heart for remembrance and ensures that your last state of the day is one of cleanliness and عبادت.

2. Recite the Three Quls

The Prophet ﷺ would recite:

  • Surah Al-Ikhlas
  • Surah Al-Falaq
  • Surah An-Nas

Then he would blow lightly into his hands and wipe over his body.

This Sunnah is a powerful means of protection from harm, evil, and negativity.

Reciting these surahs every night strengthens your connection with Allah and brings peace before sleep.

3. Recite Ayat-ul-Kursi

Reciting Ayat-ul-Kursi before sleeping is one of the most well-known and powerful Sunnahs.

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites it at night will have protection from Allah, and no harm will come to them until morning.

This verse reminds us of Allah’s greatness, power, and constant protection.

Ending your day with it brings reassurance and tranquility.

4. Make Dhikr Before Sleeping

The Prophet ﷺ taught specific dhikr to be recited before sleep:

  • SubhanAllah (33 times)
  • Alhamdulillah (33 times)
  • Allahu Akbar (34 times)

This dhikr helps calm the mind and bring peace to the heart.

It is a simple practice that carries great reward and prepares you for restful sleep.

5. Make Du’a and Reflect on Your Day

Before sleeping, take a moment to turn to Allah:

  • Ask for forgiveness for your mistakes
  • Make du’a for your needs
  • Thank Allah for your blessings

This moment of reflection (muhasabah) helps you end your day with sincerity and awareness.

It also ensures that your last thoughts are connected to Allah.

Final Reflection

The Sunnahs before sleeping are simple yet powerful. They transform an everyday routine into a moment of عبادت, reflection, and connection with Allah.

By performing wudu, reciting protective surahs, engaging in dhikr, and making du’a, we can end our day with peace and barakah.

Sleep itself becomes an act of worship when approached with the right intention.

May Allah grant us peaceful nights, protect us while we sleep, and allow us to wake up with renewed faith and strength. 🤲✨
